SUMMARY:Webinar: Returning the Oral Microbiome to a Symbiotic State
DESCRIPTION:Course Description\nThis course discusses the concept of microbial dysbiosis based on the findings\nof the Human Microbiome Project and how the microbes that we live with are\nnot necessarily the culprits we have been lead to believe. How microbes\ninteract with the human immune system is a fine line that can either protect or\nharm the host. A toolbox of strategies will be provided that will help clinicians\nto educate their patients about how to return a dysbiotic microbiome into a state\nof symbiosis. \nObjectives\n1. Discuss findings from the “Human Microbiome Project” and how they relate to the oral microbiome.\n2. Explain the interaction between a dysbiotic microbiome and its relationship to inflammation and periodontitis.\n3. Describe several systemic mediators that play a role in the transition from a healthy symbiotic state to one of disease or dysbiosis.\n4. Discuss how microbial dysbiosis and “Precision Medicine” influenced the development of the new classification of periodontal disease.\n5. Describe various evidence based strategies that will provide clinicians with the tools to assist their patients in reversing their state of dysbiosis back to one of symbiosis.\n6. Use a decision tree that models the concept of “Precision Medicine” to assist you with personalizing your recommendations for each individual patient. \nSalme E Lavigne\, Dip. DH\, BA\, MSDH\, PhD\nSalme was the founding Director of the dental hygiene program at Confederation College (Thunder Bay\, ON); Associate Professor & Chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene at Wichita State University (Wichita\, KS); and Professor & Director\, School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Manitoba.
