SUMMARY:The Microbial Balancing Act: Connecting Periodontal and Caries Pathogenesis with the Oral Microbiome
DESCRIPTION:Are you ready to elevate your clinical practice and patient outcomes with probiotics? Although traditional methods of mechanical debridement for treating gingivitis and periodontal disease are considered the gold standard\, there are limitations that we face as clinicians in helping our patients achieve their oral health goals. This course explores the shared and distinct microbial mechanisms behind periodontal disease and dental caries\, emphasizing how dysbiosis drives both conditions. Participants will learn how probiotics\, particularly Lactobacillus reuteri strains DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 5289\, may restore balance\, improve clinical outcomes\, and reduce systemic inflammation. Join Kirsten Fisher BScDH. RDH on a journey of learning about the oral microbiome and how we can use host modulation therapies such as probiotics to enhance patient outcomes. Throughout the course\, you will learn the key properties of a good probiotic and how to implement probiotics into your clinical practice. We will be covering two different strains of Limosilactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri)\, among the world’s most extensively studied probiotic bacteria. We will also review the clinical evidence supporting the use of L. reuteri in the treatment and prevention of periodontal disease and caries. \nREGISTER HERE \nLearning Objectives\nBy the end of this course\, participants will be able to: \n\nExplain how microbial dysbiosis contributes to local and systemic inflammation.\nBe able to identify the difference between a prebiotic\, probiotic and antibiotic\nIdentify what key pathogens play a role in oral diseases and systemic diseases\nIdentify the key properties behind a successful probiotic\nIdentify strategies to support a balanced oral microbiome.\nEvaluate the evidence for probiotic use (L. reuteri DSM 17938 & ATCC PTA 5289) in prevention and management of oral diseases.\n\nAbout the Speaker\nKirsten has been practicing dental hygiene for 14 years and has been immersed in the dental industry since the age of 15\, where she worked at her local dental office helping with administrative tasks and sterilization. She has always had a love for science and teeth! \nShe graduated from the University of Alberta with her BSc. in Dental Hygiene with Distinction. Her extensive experience spans both clinical practice and professional education\, where she is passionate about advancing oral health through innovative approaches. \nIn addition to her clinical work\, Kirsten works for BioGaia in the role of Manager of Medical Marketing and Clinical Education\, focusing on the role of probiotics in oral health. She is passionate about the oral microbiome and its connection not only to oral health but overall health. \nShe is also a member of the CDHA Professional Development Advisory Committee\, where she contributes to discussions on continuing education\, emerging dental research\, and advancements in the field of dental hygiene. Additionally\, she was a Swiss Dental Academy trainer for Guided Biofilm Therapy\, helping dental professionals integrate cutting-edge biofilm management techniques into their practice. \nWith her expertise in preventive care and evidence-based practice\, Kirsten is committed to educating fellow dental professionals on the latest techniques and research to enhance patient outcomes. \nREGISTER HERE\nCourse Outline \n1. SUMMARY:Curves Ahead: Successful Implementation of Left and Right Ultrasonic Instruments
DESCRIPTION:Curved left and right ultrasonic instruments have distinct traits that disrupt and remove biofilm\, surpassing the capabilities of other instruments. In this session\, Dani will ignite your enthusiasm and strengthen your clinical knowledge as she guides you on how this unique technology can and should be an integral part of debridement procedures. This webinar aims to provide an interactive experience from the comfort and convenience of your own home. Via a specialized camera\, Dani incorporates live demonstrations and if a typodont and curved inserts are available\, participants are encouraged to follow along. \nObjectives: \n\nExamine the clinical benefits of curved left and right ultrasonic instruments over straight ultrasonic instruments and hand instruments.\nDiscuss how incorporating curved ultrasonic instruments into periodontal debridement procedures can enhance your patient’s comfort.\nExplain how to adapt a variety of surfaces of curved instruments in furcations\, concavities and at the CEJ.\n\nAbout the Speaker\nDani Botbyl is an educator\, author\, and award winning researcher and has been a trailblazer for the advancement of ultrasonic technology in dental hygiene practice and education in North America. She is credited with leading the first team of researchers to investigate the topic of ultrasonic instrumentation education in dental hygiene programs with culmination of her knowledge and research producing multiple publications in industry and peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. Most recently\, Dani co-authored the second edition of Ultrasonic Periodontal Debridement: Theory and Technique (2024) and is a contributing author to the sixth edition of Darby and Walsh Dental Hygiene Theory and Practice (2025). Dani has presented hundreds of evidence-based programs to dental hygiene students\, faculty and practicing clinicians worldwide\, served as the National Clinical Educator with Dentsply Sirona 2000-2023 and held a faculty position at Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology in Welland\, Ontario Canada for over a decade. Dani’s passion for enhancing the practice of dental hygiene create learning experiences that are not to be missed! \nContinuing Education Categories\n\nC1-Head\, neck\, oral and dental anatomy\nC4-General & oral pathology\nD2-Periodontology-including assessment\, diagnosis\nD3-Non-surgical dental hygiene therapy-including instrumentation (hand and powered) and ergonomics\n\nREGISTER HERE
