SUMMARY:Palliative Oral Care
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging\, collaborative webinar as we delve into the vital topic of palliative oral care. Palliative oral care is essential for anyone (at any age) who is dependent on others  or who face serious health-related suffering.  Due to frailty and life-limiting illnesses\, oral care for residents in long-term care (LTC) is paramount to help maintain dignity\, wellbeing and person-centered care throughout all stages of life. \nThroughout the COVID-19 pandemic\, nurses expressed feelings of burnout. This emphasized the urgent need for collaboration among all healthcare professionals to ensure adequate support for caregivers and accessible care for BC residents. \nDental hygienists (DHs) play a pivotal role in maintaining oral health and are dedicated to maintaining competence in supporting the evolving and diverse health needs of the public. Developing competence in delivering palliative dental hygiene care presents an opportunity to apply the full scope of dental hygiene practice by implementing noninvasive techniques and providing comprehensive support. \nIn LTC settings\, integrating DHs as collaborative partners alongside nurses is essential for providing client-centered palliative oral care care. This collaborative approach is fundamental to reducing the severity of oral health problems\, preventing pain\, and maintaining cleanliness and comfort to the end of life. Come join Lynda McKeown (RDH)\, Carolyn Weiss (RDH)\, and Heather WoodBeck (RN) to discuss palliative dental hygiene care for persons in LTC and understand how our residents can access the “right provider at the right time.” \nBushby RL\, McKeown LL\, Raynak SE\, Weiss CL\, Woodbeck HH\, Palliative dental hygiene oral care. In: Darby and Walsh Dental Hygiene Theory and Practice\,6th ed. Pierun JA\, Amyot CC\, editors. \nLearning Objectives: \n1. Define and discuss palliative care and explain palliative dental hygiene oral care.\n2. Recognize the signs of frailty\, aging\, and oral complications manifested in the mouth during the process of dying and death.\n3. Understand and apply the dental hygiene process of care to persons who are palliative and/or at the end of life.\n4. Enhance the ability of nurses to  value and promote  palliative oral care as integral to improved quality of life.\n5. Appreciate the role of interprofessional collaboration to provide appropriate oral care for palliative care clients\n6. Advocate for inclusion of dental hygienists as an essential health care provider in legislation in the public health care system. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Webinar: Oral-Systemic Links: What Do We Tell Our Patients?
DESCRIPTION:Oral-Systemic Links: What do we tell our patients?? (1.0 hrs) \nResearch has been conducted for over 30 years on proposed relationships between periodontal disease and numerous systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease\, diabetes\, respiratory diseases etc. However\, the nature of these relationships has not always been clearly described or understood resulting in oral health professionals inadvertently giving their patients inaccurate information. As research continues to evolve\, having a clear understanding of the most current state of the evidence for these relationships can play a significant role in educating your patients.\nThere are currently 57 diseases being researched that are suspected of having some form of relationship with periodontal disease. This course will help you to relay accurate information to your patients about the nature of these linkages and how maintenance of periodontal health can have an influence on their overall health. \nCourse Objectives\n1. Discuss some common misconceptions about the nature of relationships between oral and systemic diseases.\n2. Describe the difference between “association” and “causation”.\n3. Discuss the current state of the evidence for proposed associations between periodontal disease and: cardiovascular diseases\, respiratory diseases\, adverse pregnancy outcomes\, diabetes\, rheumatoid arthritis\, cognitive decline\, inflammatory cancers\, and others.\n4. Discuss the most plausible explanation for these associations.\n5. Discuss how maintaining good periodontal health can have a positive influence on overall health.\n6. Develop educational strategies that will help to provide accurate information to your patients regarding oral-systemic relationships. \nSalme E Lavigne\, Dip. Explain the interaction between a dysbiotic microbiome and its relationship to inflammation and periodontitis.\n3. Describe several systemic mediators that play a role in the transition from a healthy symbiotic state to one of disease or dysbiosis.\n4. Discuss how microbial dysbiosis and “Precision Medicine” influenced the development of the new classification of periodontal disease.\n5. Describe various evidence based strategies that will provide clinicians with the tools to assist their patients in reversing their state of dysbiosis back to one of symbiosis.\n6. SUMMARY:Webinar: Influencing Health with Oral Probiotics with Lorraine Gambacourt\, RDH (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:The supportive role of Oral Probiotics has been researched for more than 30 years. The introduction of oral probiotics in the maintenance phase of therapy can help to positively influence biofilm repopulation and promote oral microbial balance to improve outcomes of periodontal disease\, halitosis\, caries and more. Could this be the “missing link” to achieving long lasting\, more sustainable health outcomes? \nLearning Objectives \nAs an outcome of this course\, the participant will be able to: \n\nExplain how a healthy oral microbiome is compromised.\nEvaluate the large body of scientific evidence in support of oral probiotics.\nList the specific pathogens that are inhibited by various oral probiotic strains.\nIdentify a particular oral probiotic that can help reduce the incidence of ear and throat infections.\nDifferentiate between the types of oral probiotics available.\n\nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Webinar: Expanding Our Role — A Focus on Reducing Systemic Risk with Lorraine Gambacourt\, RDH (Part 1)
DESCRIPTION:Positively influencing oral-systemic health…What does that look like to you? It’s a given that oral health impacts systemic health. Yet\, do we consistently evaluate our current methods of assessment and treatment and introduce changes that can bring about improved\, more sustainable health outcomes? \nA truly valuable and committed Dental Hygienist is never satisfied with the “status quo”. We must continually evolve and expand our knowledge to be able to educate our clients while implementing health strategies and modalities that promote a healthy biofilm\, advance oral health\, and reduce systemic risk. I believe to be effective we must apply a four-stage approach. \nIn this webinar\, I will be touching on some important concepts of the first three stages: \n\nA review of assessment strategies and some of the key risk factors that can significantly affect client outcomes and systemic health.\nWe will explore the concept of biofilm testing using DNA analysis and various modalities that can assist you in your effort to “battle pathogenic biofilm.”\nWe will address chronic inflammation as well as how to educate your client to be an advocate for their own health!\n\nNOTE:  Stage 4 is all about sustaining that improved level of health.  A big part of that involves introducing Oral Probiotics\, so be sure to join in for the May 25th webinar! \nLearning Objectives \n\nExplain the benefits of DNA microbial analysis as a risk assessment tool.\nIdentify methods that help assess disease and aid the client in understanding their condition.\nList several non-invasive treatment modalities that address the bacterial burden\, inflammatory component of PD\, and host response.\nDescribe the value of specific diagnostic tests that can help assess a client’s inflammatory burden.\n\nClick here to register
